Frequently Asked Questions
Do students need to have a chemistry background before taking this program?
No. Students can take this program without taking any prior chemistry courses. I will teach the foundational skills students need to succeed in AP Chemistry.
How many students are in the sessions?
Practice sessions are limited to 5 students so each student can receive high-quality individualized feedback on their problem-solving skills.
The learning session may have more students. Students can still ask questions during the lecture-style session.
What are the learning sessions like?
The learning sessions are designed to follow the College Board’s AP Chemistry curriculum and typically run 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on how much material needs to be covered.
I present the material in easy-to-understand language with many examples so students can see how the concepts are applied to problems. Students are encouraged to ask questions.
What are the practice sessions like?
In the one-hour practice sessions, students actively work through problems related to the material taught that week. These are the types of questions students are very likely to see in their AP Chemistry class.
I use a web app that allows me to see each student’s work and provide both private and public feedback. Students are unable to see each other’s work.
After the practice session, I upload the problems for students to finish. At the end of the week, I upload the solutions.
What if the student cannot make it to a session?
The student can rewatch the recording of the learning session. Learning sessions are recorded and posted in the program portal.
There are multiple practice sessions each week, so students can attend another practice session if they cannot make their regular session. The questions and solutions are also posted in the program portal after each session.
What if the student needs help or has questions between sessions?
The student can email me at any time and receive an explanation shortly. I’m here to support the student in any way I can.
Do you have a set curriculum timeline?
Yes. I follow the curriculum set forth by the College Board. Please email me if you would like to see the timeline.
What is the expected time commitment?
The student is expected to attend the 1 hour learning session and the 1 hour practice session each week.
If the student does not finish all the problems during the practice session, they are expected to finish the problems on their own time. This should take about an hour max.
Are students assigned homework?
Homework is not assigned. Students are expected to finish all the weekly practice session problems. Most students will finish the majority of the problems during the practice session.
Do students need to purchase any supplementary materials?
No. I provide all the materials and practice problems.
How can you assess understanding in a group setting?
Students actively work through problems during practice sessions. I use a web app that allows me to see each student’s work and provide both private and public feedback. Students cannot see each other’s work.
What about the rest of the units in AP Chemistry?
The goal of the Summer Prep Program is not to teach the entire AP Chemistry curriculum before school starts. Instead, the goal is to build the strongest possible foundation so students can succeed when the school year begins.
For students who want continued support during the school year, I also offer a year-round AP Chemistry program that covers the remaining units, provides weekly practice, additional support, mock exams, and AP exam preparation.
Do you offer support during the school year?
Absolutely.
Students can choose to continue after the summer if they want. The school-year program is similar, with 2 sessions per week and additional support.
Students can attend optional drop-in tutoring sessions to receive extra help.
Students also receive access to the AP Chemistry Masterclass with video lessons, practice problems, practice exams, notes, and more.
As the AP exam gets closer, students also receive full-length AP Chemistry practice exams.
